“Temptation (Matthew 4: 1-11)” by Fr. Jim Willig

Lent begins today – Ash Wednesday. The Gospel of Matthew for this Sunday addresses the devil tempting Jesus as he completes his 40 days of fasting in the desert.

The devil showed up as soon as Jesus was weak from hunger and thirst, but the devil had no power over Him. Jesus stood strong in the truth of God’s Love and Word.

Fr. Jim compares the desert to a ‘training camp,’ which strengthens us to avoid the temptations in our lives. The devil shows up just when we are tired and hungry for those missing pieces in our lives. Just like Jesus, we are strengthened by God’s Love and Word, protecting us from the devil’s tempting offers.
