In this Gospel of Mark, the disciples are upset because they had learned that another man that is not a part of their group was driving out demons in Jesus’s name. Jesus, on the other hand, said firmly that if one is performing a mighty deed in His name, then don’t speak ill of him. For whoever is not against us is for us!
Jesus continued to say that if anyone leads another away from God, whoa to that one! He illustrated this by saying that if one hand does something wrong, one should cut it off… Jesus was being emphatic, stressing that a person’s spiritual soul was much more important than a person’s physical self.
