“Hate the Sin, Love the Sinner” (John 8: 1-11) by Fr. Jim Willig

This is the Scripture that covers the story of the adulteress woman. This is the second most popular Gospel, next to the Prodigal Son. It is the wonderful story about the great forgiveness and mercy of Our Lord, Jesus Christ.

This adulteress was forced to stand in front of Jesus and all of these judgmental men, but the man who also committed adultery was no where to be found.  The law from the time of Moses stated that this woman should be stoned to death.

The Scribes and Pharisees were trying to trap Jesus. If Jesus releases the woman, He would be violating the Jewish Law. If he ordered her to be stoned, Jesus would be violating the Roman Law.  Jesus simply bent down and started tracing in the dirt with his finger.  Then each person present walked away one by one.
